CARDBOARD BOOKSHELF

This bookshelf was fabricated using cardboard, hot glue, and watercolor tape. The design was based on the book Hop on Pop by Dr. Seuss. This book presents rhyming words in a fun and playful manner, helping young kids learn how to read, write, and rhyme. To facilitate the design, a concept was chosen: Organic Form. This concept represents the art style within the book. Throughout the entire book, there are no straight lines, making for a sketchy look and a whimsical feel. Some elements derived from the concept are movement, curvilinear line, and variety, which further guided the design.
When my colleagues and I were finished with our furniture pieces, we all donated them to a local elementary school, called W.T. Moore Elementary. Mine went to a kindergarten class. The teachers and students were pleased, being given a unique shelf based on a book that they chose.
FURNITURE DESIGN & fabrication
In the Spring semester of 2015, I was enrolled in a furniture design class, where the pieces below have been created. In this class, we used machinery such as jig saws, band saws, CNC routers, and a laser cutter to help cut out each piece.

FURNITURE FABRICATION
This project was based on a random swatch of fabric that was given to me. In the second image, you can see the fabric deconstruction into characteristics that are used in the designs of both the wooden wall panel and the furniture piece. One 2' x 4' wall panel was created using a CNC router, and sanded using a dremel and sand paper. One 1/6"=1'-0" scale furniture model was created using a laser cutter, and glued together using wood glue. This piece was meant to be flat-packed and shipped, therefore all of the parts had to fit into a 4' x 4' square piece of wood.
